Kongara Manee Resource Centre Video Part 1

This is a video Part 1 of the Manee Resource Center in Bougainville. I visited in November 2010.
High up in the hills of Kongara, overlooking Kieta and Arawa is The Manee Resource Centre, a brilliant project in the middle of the Kongara mountain forests being built for the preservation of certain old traditional knowledge of people in this area. It is entirely self funded. You can read the article here http://www.myamazingparadise.com/?p=328&lang=en-us#more-328

The Giant ‘Avatar’ like Trees of Sohano Island

I was shocked by the size of these huge raintrees on Suhano Island in Buka. These were huge, with massive overhanging branches like something out of a Hollywood movie. No doubt these trees on this historical island must be at leasts 100 yrs old. The giant Suhano Island trees are in the photo below. To give you an idea of the scale of the trees, there is a man, at least 6feet tall standing at the base of the tree on the right.

“ When you are travelling in the canoe at night, you have to slap the side of the canoe with the paddle every time you bring it out of the water, so the dugongs know that you are approaching,” the young man explained to me.

Pisin Island – an island in Bougainville that is still growing

When I was in Bougainville, staying at the Pidia village ( Arawa), I asked my hosts if there was an interesting island nearby.
Pisin Island

Pisin island - to the big blue sea

From what I heard, several islands began to appear around the seas just off the Arawa coastline during the period of the crisis and they were not ‘discovered’ until the period of the ceasefire and peace in the early 2000’s. [Read more →]
