When I was small, everyone use to talk about Sepik baskets. Whenever someone went to Wewak and came back, everyone will be pestering him to give them some of the baskets that he has brought back.

Sepik Baskets, more at the bottom of this post

Sepik people are famous for these beautiful baskets that they weave from special reeds.
But they all have different styles. For the average Joe, we cant tell them apart, but they can and their explanation of these differences is both fascinating and complicated and i cant remember the differences to clear.
I am sharing some pictures of these beautiful baskets I collected in the hope that someone reading this post can explain the difference.

When we were in PNG 40 years ago the baskets that we saw and purchased weren’t from colorfully dyed reed – they were shades of brown reed, and were more the traditional basket shape – we also have Sepik trays that are so beautiful and useful that are shades of brown. Perhaps I never saw the more colorful ones when we were there. Is it something new that they are doing?

Ho Jo Ann, they color the reeds in now…but you can still find the original baskets without colors.
